Sharon - my gut feeling is that in its current form it won't make a lot of impact, because this kind of shared site annotation has been tried before and I think people just aren't that interested in it.

That said, you should never write off anything Google throws its weight behind and, as I said in the post, there's every possibility of a third party app adding some value which could suddenly make Sidewiki a lot more interesting for people.

I still argue that if you visit a brand's website, you're probably mainly interested in the content of that website rather than what other people have to say about it - but maybe this will change if usage of Sidewiki grows and evolves.

Hey Lance,
Great post, thank you. I will admit when I first read it I thought, **it, I should be aware of this! Your points about not panicking them worked for me! Although I am not sure I agree with your thoughts on people wanting to read the website and not the Sidewicki.....isn't that how Twitter & Facebook got so popular, voyeurism?! :)

Not quite sure what it will ADD, but like anything we will all make our choices on whether or not it will provide value or just gossip!!

Hi Lance

Great post, as usual!

Here's a little piece I did on this very topic a few weeks ago based on an article that Mark Borkowski did in the Guardian. Take a look at the poll results...
