Thanks for your comments. You raise an interesting point Mark. Google Buzz has been a resounding failure, yet, with a monopoly over the Search Engine arena, Google as a brand is so successful that the term has become an accepted verb in the English language! I think there's definitely a link between the reactions to Buzz and Ping. People have a fixed, accepted perception of the tools both Google and Apple offer, and the transition to a social media platform is not a natural step for either of these brands to take.

Laura, I agree. What with the 'kerfuffle' around signal problems for the iPhone 4, and now this sloppy start for Ping, it seems that Apple have, sadly, moved to prioritise speed and the need to keep ahead of competitors over quality!

Somebody made the excellent observation that a built-in user base does not equal a service's success. Take a look at how poorly Buzz has done, for example, despite having 170 million regular Gmail users at the time of the social network's launch. Likewise, although Facebook looks to be offering serious competition to Foursquare et al. with their launch of Places and a 500 million built-in user base, their victory is still far from certain. Again, some were already claiming the death of Foursquare, but actually, if anything, it's doing better now than it any time during its history.

Apple has an ethos of offering closed systems, whereas social networking services traditionally are open. I think it's going to require a shift in perspective before Apple really figure out how to make Ping a viable alternative to Last.fm and Spotify.

I love Apple, but Ping is already being attacked by spammers - have they released this latest innovation too quickly again?

Not quite the way I imagine Apple planned to shift the focus from the iPhone 4 debacle...
