The recent flurry of companies bribing people to spam Twitter is an example of this: they know enough to understand that lots of links will help spread their message, but not enough to know that people can tell if it isn't organic and will react accordingly.

The Internet isn't some brave new world; it's an improved information conduit that sits on top of the one we already have. There are none of the usual gatekeepers here, so there's no alternative to lots of hard work doing honest, friendly, personal networking.

Absolutely. Listening first through buzz monitoring and sentiment monitoring and then using agency people who are already immersed in social media etiquette is the way to go.
