Not that anybody's reading this any more - but just in case anybody's browsing the archives, the latest news from Google's Matt Cutts is that 301 redirects do in fact result in PageRank loss:

The other element for url shorteners and SEO are the kinds of redirect employed - Bit.ly and budurl both offer 301 redirects, not sure about the others but 301s are permanent redirects (the ones that search engines like best).

Fair enough, it seems I was mistaken about PageRank flowing through shortened URLs - I still don't think it's a good idea to use them unless necessary, since there's no way to embed keywords in the anchor text, which makes them significantly less valuable than full-fat links.

Who would have thought it, indeed. Two people in the same industry, writing about the same subject and independently arriving at approximately similar conclusions? What are the odds?

Hey Lance

I think you're a little mistaken - bit.ly (and most of the other URL shortening services do pass on PageRank. Have a read of this if you don't believe me...
http://searchengineland.com/analysis-which-url-shortening-service-should-you-use-17204

btw, Eliot Van Buskirk at Wired seems to have spontaneously come to *some* of the same conclusions as you:
